Beaconsfield has been involved in the Gwenyth Ewens award for the last ten years. The Award is named for an inspirational lady who during her working life was a sound and lighting engineer and has been running since 1988. She always had a love of the historical architecture of Fremantle. Therefore the Award is open to the Year 6 and Year 7 students from those schools within the Fremantle City locality. Ms Ewens originally was able to present the awards herself, but since her death there is always someone closely linked to her who presents the winning vouchers and encouragement awards to the students. The opening night is always on the first Monday of the Fremantle Festival and all of the work is hung in the Fremantle Children's Library.
