Fremantle City Council Harmony Day Mosaic Pots Project

 

While we had done all of the designing, arranging and gluing of tesserae at school, Robyn still had to attach each of the 'tiles' to the individual pots - then grout them and finally clean them, ready for the launch on Harmony Day - March 20th 2008.

 

Five local schools worked with Robyn Varpins to create images in mosaic form to represent what Harmony means to us.

At Beaconsfield, the Year 5 Room 15 class were the lucky ones chosen to become involved in the project during their art classes.

 

What does harmony look like at Beaconsfield PS?

  • At Beaconsfield PS many different people come together to learn and have fun.

  •  Harmony at Beaconsfield  is different cultures combining together to share peace and happiness.

  •  Harmony at Beaconsfield is also respecting each others opinions and different ways of doing things.

  •  Harmony Week gives us all a chance to celebrate our connections to each other regardless of our differences.

  •  At our school, we are welcoming to all. We care about others and try to help everyone fit in.

These photos below show just a few of our designs and the tesserae glued into place prior to being cemented onto the pots and grouted. The black grout really added to the overall design of each 'tile'. We had great fun looking at all of the four decorated pots to find our own. Robyn's idea of including a border in the same colour on each tile really helped to bring the tiles together. Some of us did a 'top strip' shape, but Robyn used them instead to fill in some of the gaps between the tiles and left the tops free of mosaics, instead painting them a blue which toned with the colours of the tiles we had used.

 Being involved in the Mosaic Pots Project was a fun and enjoyable experience. Thanks, Robyn for helping us to get our mosaics finished on time.

Love, Peace and people connecting were the main themes in our mosaics.

Now that the mosaics are installed on the pots they look even better.

We hope the public will enjoy taking time to view our fabulous mosaics and prompt them to think about what harmony means to them.
