Our project began with a class discussion early in Term 2, 2006 about the ways we could celebrate Mother’s Day.  The children decided to serve a special breakfast for their mums and the idea of opening the 6a Café was born.

Many of us already had been to Restaurants and Cafes in Fremantle. Tony, Bruno's Dad, owns and runs a restaurant. He came in and talked with to us about the things we needed to know such as:

In the classroom we learned about how a cafe runs.

Isis: We made a sign to say  Welcome to our 6a Cafe  and as it was a special day another Happy Mothers' day sign. There was also a sign on the door saying when the 6a Cafe would be open and some more signs for the kitchen.

Bruno: When we set the tables we placed napkins, plates, cups  cutlery and a menu each of us had designed and written for each person. When our Mums arrived we had to say, "Madam, let me show you to your table."

Douglas: Once everyone was seated, we were the waiters. Each of us had an order pad and when our Mums read the menu and told us what they wanted for breakfast, we wrote it down on our pad. We then had to stand in a queue to collect the drinks and food our Mums had ordered.

Hannah: We made up the muesli and the pancake mixture the day before .

Bruno: Tony cooked the pancakes on the day. Mums could choose orange or apple juice to drink.

Isis: We loved serving our mums.

Hamish: I really liked making the food.

Isis: We enjoyed it so much we set up our own 6a Cafe in the back of our room.

For food we used play dough. We had to make more order pads.

Hannah: I brought in some toy pots and pans for us to use on our cardboard stove which we had designed and made.

We also made aprons by hand - without using sewing.

The waiter's green apron has a waistband stapled to it. The Chef's apron goes over the shoulders and is tied with a ribbon of fabric. The Chef also wore a paper chef's hat in our 6a Cafe kitchen.

The Chef and the waiter are talking about their menu for the day.

We are standing here with Tony after the breakfast and we all sang a Happy Mother's Day song to our Mums.

Finally it was our turn for breakfast.

Hannah: First we ate all the left overs, then we could go to Tony and order what we wanted for ourselves

Isis: A few of us were the dish washers. We washed up in a bowl of warm soapy water.

As our end of term activity we attended our chef‘s restaurant Zamarea for lunch.

We all had a great time with everyone involved in the process of making gnocchi from scratch guided by Tony and his assistant, Georgia.

We made gnocchi - everyone helped.

1. The potatoes had already been peeled and cooked. We had to mash them by pushing then through a masher.

2. Flour is added to the potato.  A dent in the flour was made with the back of  a big spoon.

3. We mixed the egg up, then we poured the egg into the dent in the flour and potato mix.

4. We then had to mix - or knead - the dough on the table.

5. We had to roll the dough out into a snake shape.

6. Then we used the knife to chop it into roundish squares. Tony and Daniela put the gnocchi into the bowl and cooked it.

Crunchy Italian bread goes great with Italian food.

Bruno: At the end of a meal you can use your last bit of bread to soak up the tomato juices left on your plate

We were all so busy eating and enjoying our gnocchi that no one took a photo of us eating it!

The procedure above for making gnocchi was composed with Douglas, Hannah and Bruno.

Douglas: Before we left, Tony and his staff sang us a song  in Italian about a Zookeeper.

We all joined in and sang it with them. I made a speech to say Thankyou.

Everyone really enjoyed their gnocchi which was served with tomato sauce and lovely fresh bread.

Lots of children asked for second helpings.

How is a Restaurant different to Home?

Bruno: There are more tables in a restaurant.

Hannah: You don't have menus at home.

Douglas: Sometimes though your Mum or Dad might ask you what you want.

Jarrad: Normally you have to pay but we didn't on our special day.

Victoria: You can choose what you want to eat and you don't have to cook it because the chef does.

Jarrad: All the tables were set with glasses, knife and fork, table cloths and fresh crunchy Italian bread.

You don't have to wash up afterwards :)

We all had such a great time we decided it would be nice to prepare something special for Tony and Daniela, to say thankyou for our lunch.  We decided with Mrs O'Brien to create a large Mondrian style painting on a big canvas during our Art sessions.

We presented our 'Mondrian Masterpiece' to Tony and Daniela at our assembly on Sept 27. You can see photos on our Mondrian page.

They loved it.
