In harmony with the rebirth of nature, Norooz always begins on the first day of spring and lasts for thirteen days. Norooz ceremonies are symbolic of two old concepts, the end and the rebirth. A few weeks before the New Year, Iranians clean and arrange their homes. They bake pastries, make new clothes and germinate seeds as a sign of renewal. A ceromonial cloth is set up in each house. Troubadours, referred to as Haji Firuz, wear brightly coloured outfits and disguise themselves with makeup. Haji Firuz sing and dance as they parade through the streets with kettle drums, trumpets and tambourines spreading the news of the coming new year and bringing good cheer.
