A call went out via the school newsletter for all of everyone's spare "BLUE THINGS" to be brought to school to be incorporated into an amazing collage of marine board and recycled bits. Ideally the blue things would be durable and weather proof as they will be exposed to the elements of wind, rain and sun. Things such as blue toys, tins, lids, pens, pottery, plastic, stones, wood, marbles and pegs were soon rolling in. We even got some blue stuff from ReMIDA, Perth's Creative Reuse Centre.
Coming up with a design idea for the class shapes Each class was asked to nominate and design an outline shape onto which their "BLUE THINGS" would be arranged and glued. Many classes chose shapes based on themes they had been working on during the year. Water based themes following our Water Week activities have featured very strongly. Look out for the surfer from Room 7!! ...then drawing it up onto the board. Room 7's shark needed 2 boards. |

The paint helps both to seal the marine ply against the elements and also makes sure that the viewer will only see BLUE when they look at each of the shapes, as it was not always easy to cover a lot of the surface area of the shape with collections of blue things.
Arranging all of the blue things on the shape
First ideas were often not what ended up happening at the end.
Check out some initial ideas by Room 17 and their finished products - wonderful theatrical masks of comedy and tragedy.

Gluing the blue things into place was not as easy as it sounded on the nail glue packaging. |

Installing the shapes on the wall Its probably just as well that they started to install the shapes on Tuesday as it takes a while to work out what belongs together. eg Doesn't the Kindy butterfly look perfect next to the Room 6 stem and leaf. Be sure to look very closely at the stem as it has labels to help you understand just how much the class has learned about flowering plants. |
Each time you went past the wall, something new had gone up. Slowly but surely we were seeing more blue things and less grey bricks. The sound of Sally and Alessandra and other helpers drilling holes meant yet another piece had been installed. Room 6a were impressed with all the hard work. |
Standing back and admiring the finished effect. While the shapes were being installed, at the end of each day, students would bring their parents around to the stage area to check out the progress and to show off their classes' shapes ...and still the wall was being filled up with blue things
The Staff had a great view of the wall from the Staff Room as it changed its colour.
and the Principal, Mrs Webster, now has a great view from her office window! "Much better than grey bricks, " she said.

Celebrating the Opening The crowds rolled up from 4.00pm on, firstly for some bargains at the Jumble Sale and then to listen to the musical entertainment from 5.30 on.
Parents, students, teachers and former students mixed together on the lawn as sausages sizzled and picnics were spread.
Conversations about the year gone and plans for the holidays and for future hopes and dreams were in the air as everyone relaxed. |
IEC students with Siaka played the drums while 6 girls danced to the African rhythm. They were all so good that everyone called for an encore! |
Former students Bill And Theo came back as part of "The Silent Animators", wowing the younger crowd and launching their new CD.
As the sun set behind our new "Bluetiful Wall", people continued to mingle and chat while the "Funkeleros" took over the stage and kept the crowd entertained until it was time to go home.
What a great night for our Beacy school community to end the year.
What a wonderful whole school project to show off our creative skills.
Thanks to the P&C and all of the organising committee members. |

We decided on shapes about the circus because that was what we were doing in class. |

Flight
We had loved doing a lot on Flight in our class, so it was easy to choose our shapes. We all helped to design where the blue things should go and then to glue them on. |

Science: Plants & Water

We suggested then voted on our shapes. We glued the shapes on ourselves. |

4 Yr 2/3 |
Life and Living
We decided on our shapes as a class. Three of us were chosen to draw the shapes. All of us worked in groups to attach the blue things to the shapes. |

Water
We had been talking about water and one of the children drew a raindrop |

6 Yr 1 |
Flowering Plants
We had to make sure all of the bits were blue. There were many different sorts of blues. It was fun the way the glue squished out the sides. The more blue bits we added, the better it looked. We like our design because it is something we had learned about. We think it looks beautiful - like artists have made it. |
| 6a Yr 1/2 | The Beach
Place all the bigger bits first, and then fill in around them with the other little bits was Rm 6a's solution to arranging and gluing on their blue things. | |
7 Yr 5 |
Spirals |
We started with small things and then added bigger things as the spiral got larger. |
| 7a IEC M2 | The Ocean
Everyone drew an idea, then the class voted on the designs. Because we are active and love the beach we chose the surfer. |
8 Yr 3/4 |

In groups, we chose and drew a shape and then glued on a large assortment of Blue things that we had collected. |

We worked in 3 groups to finish off our 3 shapes. |
| 11 Yr 3 | Numbers
We chose a number theme as we have done so much maths this year. The objects were random however and not number based |
| 13 IEC M1 |
Geometry
We chose geometrical shapes as it was part of our Maths learning about regular and irregular shapes. |
| 14 IEC M2 | Rainbow Fish
We had been reading "The
Rainbow Fish" so we looked at all of the different things in the story and
voted on which shapes to have. We wanted one shiny scale. Can you see it? |
| 15 Yr 5/6 |
Marine Creatures
We each drew our ideas for shapes and voted for the best. We worked in groups to glue our shapes into patterns. We had lots of fun. |
| 16 Yr 6/7 |
Marine
From a variety of suggestions we chose a sea them because it relates to our school. We then blackboarded sea ideas and voted on them. Finally we drew up a range of sea objects and voted on those. Different students worked on different parts of the process of creating our finished product, with some drawing it up to scale on the wood, others, used the jigsaw to cut out the shape, others painted the background and eventually small groups took turns to arrange and glue the blue things onto our shapes. |
| 17 Yr 6/7 |
Drama
We collected lots of blue things and used them to create facial features for the faces and different patterns for the masks. |
