Junior Playground 'Underwater Mural'
with Artists in Residence Tania Ferrier and Petit Cherie Boylan-Knight

The "boys" mural features more cartoon styled caricatures of underwater animals.
The "girls" mural features more realistic styled sea creatures.
Tania, who worked with students on the north wall,
created the focal point of the Scuba diver.
Petit, who worked with students on the south wall,
created the focal point of the mermaid.
The teachers and students from the Mainstream Year 2 class and all of the three Junior ILC classes went to visit AQWA. While there, they had great fun viewing the different animals in the underwater aquarium as well as in the touch pool and smaller aquariums. They drew a variety of animals while they were there.
In the beginning...
In the middle...
...and at the end.
A wall rendering busy bee was run by a parent to teach eager newcomers the tricks of the trade. Tania and Petit, using the student's drawings and an overhead projector were able to pencil in and create four underwater scenes.
Next each drawing was outlined in the background blue and then the blue base was carefully added. Students started to work on adding paint to their own creatures.
With each week, we could see the animals and seaweeds becoming more real as different textures were added to sea beings.
Even the ocean took on different shades of blues and greens.
As you can see, the grass at the base of the walls has also been taken up and replaced with concrete. These will become play areas next year which the younger students can use for ball games.
