Station 17: Pippettes
Who Won? Its a Straw
What Happens?
The water comes out.
Why?
When you suck through the straw you don't pull the liquid up. what you are doing is taking away some of the air that is in the straw.
This makes the pressure in the straw lower than the pressure outside.
The greater pressure of the outside air then pushes the water in the glass up through the straw and into your mouth, when your finger covers the top of the straw, the water stays in the straw.
It lessens the pressure of the air from above the straw.
The greater air pressure under the straw holds the water inside it.
