Station 4: Waterproofing

In Mrs Hunt’s activity we had to ‘’Waterproof ‘’ different types of paper. Each group was given a collection of paper such as cardboard, paper, newspaper, and straw board. Our task was to find out which of the following would be the best waterproofing material. We had wax crayons, candles, dish washing liquid, chalk and gladwrap to choose from as waterproofing materials. After covering our selection of paper with a waterproofing agent we then placed our paper into a bucket of water for 40 seconds.

We discovered that the thick paper – strawboard and cardboard covered in wax crayon proved to be the most effective way of waterproofing the paper. The wax from the crayon stopped the cardboard from absorbing the water.
