Station 6: Water Syphoning

Room 6, Junior Phase 2 IEC, organised water syphoning for the science day. We used a garden hose and some plastic tubing. We cut these up into two metre lengths. We also used ten buckets. We filled five of the buckets with water and we put these on a bench so that they were higher than the remaining empty buckets. Next one child put one end of the hose into the bucket of water. Then another child sucked on the other end of the hose. If they sucked hard enough, water came out. We held syphoning competitions where groups of four children worked as a team to syphon water using the two hoses. To win you had to be the first group to syphon the bucket of water dry. These competitions were fiercely contested. You could say that there are some big suckers in junior primary.
