Rice Day 2006

We ran a Rice Day to think about the people in so many parts of the world who eat rice as their main meal each day, we ate a simple Indian/Himalayan style meal of Rice and Dahl.

Room 11 Year 3 ran the day with the help of Mrs Kay, and parents Mrs Burns and Mrs Shanahan.

All of Room 11 made posters to advertise the Rice Day - we included the price and the date and a picture of rice in a bowl or rice being planted or harvested. We put them all over the school on the doors. The cost of $4.50 for a meal meant that we would make a profit on every bowl of rice and dhal, which would be donated to a small Himalayan village school.

In 2005 Mr Forwood was a Student Teacher in Rm 11 - he has been working in Nepal and through Mrs Kaye has helped one of the schools in Nepal that has pen pals with some of the Beaconsfield Primary School children.

Before the day we had to find helpers and rice cookers.  Lots of parents said they would help. Some cooked the dhal the day before.

On the day we collected all of the posters from around the school and put them up in the undercover area.

the helpers cooked the rice in the Canteen and organised each classes serving place

At lunch time, each class went to its table where they were served with rice, dhal and if you wanted it a dollop of yoghurt as well as an orange juice. Most of the school participated in the Rice Day Lunch including parents and teachers and we raised a total of $945

Our school is a Wastewise School, so at the end of the lunch all of the containers and spoons were collected for recycling.

Funds raised by our Rice and Dahl day made it possible for the St Paul school community to complete the building of their school. Our donation enabled the last of the bricks to be purchased.
